Absolutely not. Much of our work is done without any need to read the "dots". However, if the students wants to know more about music theory I will also help with that side of things too.

Initially no, all you need is your voice and a space you feel comfortable in (I once had a student who used their car!). I provide backing tracks/accompaniment and PDF of the pieces I recommend but if you are wanting to do any specific song then you need to let me know in advance.
