What's the difference between copy and line editing? (And which one do you need?)
Copy editing is mechanical; spelling, punctuation, grammar. Line editing is style: how the language tells the story.
Importantly, line editing is subjective.
That's why I recommend contacting me for a free 1000 word sample edit before hiring me to work on your full manuscript.
What you WILL get:
- Sentences fixed to communicate information clearly
- Changes/suggestions of vocabulary to fit the tone, genre, or mood
- Re-structuring of paragraphs for flow/clarity of information or enhancing tone/emotional impact
- Help with dialogue (to make characters sound natural and distinct)
- Fixes on over-repeated words, phrases, etc.
- Occasional minor changes to spelling, grammar, and punctuation
What you WON'T get:
- Full check of spelling, grammar, and punctuation to fit a style guide (ex. Chicago)
- Fact checking
- Continuity check of characters, plot, etc.
- Feedback on the overall story and character arcs

FAQ
Can I contact you directly with questions before placing an order?
I'd really prefer that, actually! Not every author and editor are a perfect fit. Let's have a conversation about where you are in your publishing journey and what you want out of editing, first, then decide if I'm the right editor for you AND your book.
What's your background?
I'm an American, currently living and working in Japan. I'm transgender and autistic, and have ADHD.
What's your editing experience?
6+ years freelance editing (fiction & nonfiction, native English & Japanese-to-English translations), 10+ years teaching ESL (English as Second Language) where I correct and grade essays, poetry, fiction, book reports, etc.
What's your favorite fantasy series?
Tamora Pierce's "Protector of the Small" series, which is about a young girl who is the first in generations to be allowed to train as a knight. Pierce's books were my first (and possibly best) education in grounded, consistent fantasy worldbuilding that melts into the background.
What's your favorite sci-fi series?
Animorphs, hands down. The storytelling is in first person and uses a language level appropriate for middle-grade readers, but unapologetic about depicting colonization, racism, war, and PTSD. The series was my first lesson in how vital it is to make sure your ending fits the tone of your story.
Is fanfiction real writing?
Yes, absolutely. I'd argue that writing fanfiction is one of the best ways to get practice with storytelling (narrative pacing, character and plot arcs, characterization) without all the backend stress of worldbuilding. Plus, some AUs can get very close to being practically fully original.
