I'm a book editor and beta reader who works with authors at the stage where a manuscript feels almost there, but something's still off, and it's hard to tell what from the inside. That something is usually pacing that drags, a character arc that doesn't land, a plot thread that goes nowhere, or prose that's clean but doesn't pull readers in.
