The author of an unpublished dystopian fantasy, with elements of dark fantasy and romance novel hired me as a beta reader for the opening chapters, where the story follows a single mother rebuilding her life in a small coastal town. The goal was to understand how the manuscript's quiet, character-driven opening landed with a first-time reader, whether the heroine felt alive, whether the setting had emotional purpose, and whether the story promised enough forward pull. I delivered a five-page reader's report combining strengths with specific, actionable revision guidance.
