I’ve served as a Senior Program Officer at the National Endowment for the Humanities and as Executive Director of the New Mexico Humanities Council. Successfully assisted 100+ institutions in securing National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grants. Developed and managed a special challenge grant initiative for community colleges (2010-2013). Developed three new cutting-edge and forward-thinking grant programs as part of a small team: Next Generation Humanities Ph.D. (to assist graduate humanities programs in developing new career pathways for students); Humanities Access (to support programs for youth, communities of color, and low-income populations); and Creating Humanities Communities (to stimulate and proliferate meaningful humanities activities in states and U.S. territories underserved by NEH’s grant-making divisions and offices). Conducted national listening tour which included outreach visits to multiple states: Mississippi, Alabama, Oklahoma, North Dakota, New Mexico, and Montana. Led three-person team in review of internal controls and institutional effectiveness of North Dakota Humanities Council on behalf of NEH’s Federal/State Partnership Office. Represented agency at events and programs. Made presentations about agency programs at key national and regional meetings. Closely advised institutions regarding grant proposal development. Advise 100+ applicants per year, including faculty and officers at executive level, on grant competitions and review process.
