While many treat 'hearing' and 'listening' as the same, they're not. Hearing is passive, while active listening is an intentional, trained skill. Active listeners are trained in engineering questions that are meant to highlight the core problems in your heart and mind. In my work with the crisis center, I managed high-stakes interactions with distressed callers using advanced active listening techniques.
