During my experience at Gusto Marigliano in Naples, Italy, I worked as a Tourist Interpreter and Language Assistant, assisting international visitors during authentic Neapolitan pizza-making experiences. This role was particularly valuable for developing the communication and interpersonal skills that I now use as an Italian tutor. I regularly worked with English-speaking tourists from different countries and backgrounds, communicating in English while explaining Italian traditions, local culture and practical aspects of the experience. I learned how to adapt my communication style to different people, simplify explanations when necessary and make information clear, engaging and easy to understand. These skills are directly relevant to language teaching. Being a good tutor is not only about knowing grammar and vocabulary, but also about knowing how to explain concepts clearly, recognise when someone is having difficulty and find alternative ways to make a topic understandable. Working with international visitors gave me valuable real-world experience in doing this. The role also taught me how to create a welcoming environment for people who were unfamiliar with Italian language and culture. I regularly answered questions, clarified misunderstandings and encouraged interaction, helping visitors feel comfortable communicating in a foreign environment. Another important aspect was sharing Italian and Neapolitan culture with international guests. This strengthened my ability to connect language with real-life situations, traditions and everyday expressions—an approach I now bring into my lessons. Today, I use these experiences to provide personalized Italian courses and conversation lessons, helping students develop practical communication skills while discovering Italian culture. My experience at Gusto Marigliano represents an important bridge between my academic studies in Languages and Cultures and my practical experience working directly with foreign learners.
