The story The Thing That Knocks is about a girl named Mira who stays alone at her grandmothers house in the woods. On the first night, she hears strange, heavy knocking on the door. On the second night, the knocking becomes louder and angrier at the back door. On the third night, things become even scarier something starts scratching her bedroom window with long, claw-like fingers, and a creepy voice tells her to let it in.

Terrified, Mira runs to her car in the garage, but the big garage door slowly opens by itself. A tall, thin, unnatural creature with long fingers appears under the door. Mira manages to start the car and escape just in time.

The next morning, the police find no evidence no broken windows, no scratches everything looks completely normal. But Mira notices one thing the police missed: a deep scratch at the bottom of the front door with a single word carved into it.
