A server that was set up in a hurry, by someone who has since left, is one of the most common problems I get asked to fix. Usually it still works... it is just fragile, slow, and open in places nobody has looked at in years.

What I do:

Clean provisioning: users, SSH keys, sudo, firewall, fail2ban, unattended upgrades

Nginx or Apache with HTTPS, redirects, HTTP 2 and sane caching

PHP-FPM, Node or Python tuned for the RAM and cores the box actually has

MySQL, MariaDB or PostgreSQL installed, tuned and backed up

Migrations between hosts with the cutover planned so downtime is minutes, not hours

Backups that are tested by restoring them, not just configured

Debian, Ubuntu, CentOS, Rocky and AlmaLinux, on any host: Hetzner, DigitalOcean, OVH, Contabo, AWS EC2 or bare metal.
