During my internship at the 132kV WAPDA Grid Station on Murree Road, Abbottabad, I gained practical exposure to the operation and management of high-voltage power transmission systems. The internship allowed me to observe how electrical power is received, controlled, and distributed through a 132kV grid network. I developed an understanding of power flow within the grid and the role of substations in maintaining system stability and reliability. I closely studied various protection systems used in substations, including protective relays and circuit breakers, and learned how these components help detect faults and isolate faulty sections of the system to prevent damage. I also observed how engineers monitor and respond to different fault conditions to ensure continuous power supply. In addition, I became familiar with major substation equipment such as power transformers, isolators, current transformers (CTs), potential transformers (PTs), and busbars. I learned about their functions, operating principles, and basic maintenance procedures used to ensure safe and efficient operation of the grid station. This internship strengthened my practical understanding of power systems and enhanced my ability to relate theoretical electrical engineering concepts to real-world applications.
